Lacy glided past Raul as gracefully as she could in the ridiculous stiletto’s Maria placed on her feet. She’d pleaded for flats, but the woman wouldn’t budge. After walking two steps, she knew without a doubt a man had crafted the horrible shoes. Why would anyone subject themselves to a punishment like this?

Her mother would’ve been impressed that she walked from the bedroom to the door without falling ass over tit. She rubbed the heel of her hand against her chest. She missed her mom. The weight smothered her when she let herself dwell on it. With a deep breath, she sucked it up and blocked the debilitating desire to fall apart. She’d face her shame and regret later. She couldn’t bear to dwell on the grave disappointment she knew her mother would have in her.

Nieto’s hand on her back felt like a branding iron, hot and unyielding. Her hand snaked around, grabbed his fingers in a painful twist, and pushed them away. He leaned over her shoulder and placed his lips to her ear.

“Remember what I said,” he purred in a low voice.

“Keep your hands off me,” she hissed.

His arm wrapped around her waist, fingers digging deep into her hip bone. He gave a warning squeeze. She resisted the urge to spit in his face. It would get her nowhere. She needed to remember he fed on violent reactions.

Nieto turned to Raul. “Listo?”

His son nodded. “Si. Let’s go.”

Nieto ushered them out the door, then pulled a card from his front pants pocket and swiped the elevator fob. The left heel of her shoe stuck in the crack between the elevator and floor as she shuffled through.

“Dammit,” she muttered, bending down.

She raised the silk fabric, freed the mangled heel, then stepped inside with extra care. She threw Raul a nasty look as the elevator fell to the ground floor. He lowered his eyes unable to hold her gaze. She felt no satisfaction from the flash of mortification in his eyes when he turned away.

“Tonight is important. I will need you and the girl to stay with me or Raul. No wandering off. No conversations with anyone.” Nieto’s expression flattened as he locked his gaze on her. “Do I make myself clear?”

She crossed her arms and pressed her lips into a fine line. He chuckled and tightened his grip around her waist. Her hands curled into fists at her sides. Arrogant prick.

The elevator dinged and the doors opened at the garage level. Nieto’s two bodyguards waited beside a long, sleek limo parked at the curb. Raul opened the back passenger door on the driver’s side for Willow.

Willow’s eyes surveyed the garage, then sought out hers. Their gazes connected like magnets. The girl was scared. But underneath Lacy read steely determination. Willow nodded at her, then ducked inside the limo. Raul followed, leaving her alone with his father.

Nieto guided her around to the other side then stopped. She gasped in surprise as he trapped her against the side of the limo, grinding his pelvis against her.
